Day 15 am - Grand Canyon
Up at 7am, prepped backpack for hike into Grand Canyon, Mel still ill so she stayed in bed. Packed 4 cheese, ham and turkey baps, 6 bottles of water and a cold coffee. Walk was simply stunning. Majestic views at every turn, weather perfect sunny and low to mid 20’s. Made the 1.5 mile point in about 30 minutes and the 3 mile rest point about an hour and 15 mins in. Ate a couple of baps and had the coffee at the mile point, seriously contemplated going to Indian point ( another 1.5 miles) but was getting very warm with the 3 mile climb up estimated to take 2 to 3 times longer in the mid day heat with very little shade. No water taps operational also as a pipe had split. Good decision. Climb up was a grueller, drank all the water….can see why people get in trouble and over estimate their own ability, the last death here on the Bright Angel trail was a woman at the 3 mile point a couple of months ago through exhaustion. Made the trip back up in about 3 hours so 5 hrs total with eating time.
Showered and walked the 1.5 mile through the national park to Yavapei Tavern - saw Elk and Deer en route. Got to the lodge gagging for a pint, stated AZ Law requires everyone for passport ID for alcohol ( we also got asked for ID in Sedona). I forgot my passport. Had to get a Shuttle bus back to lodge to get it and catch the bus back. Finally got to the tavern and they never even asked for ID. FFS. Mel cam to me later on about 6 and we had wine, beers and a massive shared nachos. About $90 total. Then walked the 1.5 mile back along the rim. Walked about 35 miles in two days. Collapsed in bed.
