After another morning on the road, we made a welcome stop near Lockerbie for a large cappuccino from Costa Coffee. With plenty of miles still ahead of us, the caffeine boost was just what was needed before continuing our journey north towards the Highlands.

By around 4pm, we arrived at Fortrose Bay Campsite on the Black Isle. The campsite sits in a beautiful coastal location, right next to a traditional links golf course. Although a strong breeze swept in from the Moray Firth, the setting was stunning, with wide open views and that unmistakable feeling that our NC500 adventure had truly begun.

Once settled, we headed over to nearby Chanonry Bay, one of the most famous places in the UK to spot dolphins. Armed with optimism and a bit of patience, we stood looking out across the water and were rewarded with sightings of a couple of dolphins breaking the surface. Seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild was a real highlight and made the visit well worthwhile.

Nearby stands the iconic Chanonry Point Lighthouse, a picturesque white tower that has guided vessels through these waters for generations. With the sea stretching out beyond it and dolphins occasionally appearing offshore, it was easy to see why so many visitors are drawn to this spot.

Back at the motorhome, it was time to relax after the day’s travelling. Mel kindly fired up the barbecue and cooked a simple but perfect evening meal of cheeseburgers. Accompanied by a couple of beers, including a rich and creamy Black Sheep Milk Stout, it was exactly the sort of meal that tastes even better when enjoyed outdoors after a day of exploring.

As the evening rolled on, we took a walk along the beach. The wind was certainly making its presence known, but thankfully the rain stayed away. The fresh sea air and the sound of the waves provided the perfect backdrop for a peaceful stroll before darkness began to fall.

After a long day on the road, the campsite showers were very much appreciated. The shower block was absolutely spotless and provided a welcome chance to freshen up and wash away the miles travelled.

Freshening up after the day

With the essentials taken care of, we spent the remainder of the evening relaxing in the motorhome, watching a little television and reflecting on the day. By around 10pm, we were tucked up in bed, listening to the breeze outside and looking forward to the next stage of our NC500 adventure.
