[Thailand 2024]
Chiang Mai day 4
Woke around 8:45 for the 1.5km walk to The Ping river terminal for the longtail cruise. Had a coffee and scrambled eggs and sausages at the “Going up cafe” which was very good especially at around £3 all in. Had a look in the local temple at the riverside which was beautiful and then walked to the harbour. Very quiet and peaceful area and the locals were feeding the huge catfish, the river is teaming with them! Had another coffee and nearly missed the departure as I was at the wring place but spotted it at the last minute and made a run for it. About 12 people on this longtail boat, spotted local fishermen and the usual riverside activities. Stopped at a very peaceful place for lunch of Khao Soi and ice cream and the local fruit Longan Juice. Met some fascinating characters on the boat including a real life cowboy from Alberta, Canada, a mid 50’s woman who booked a two week trip to escape her wretched life in Quebec and ended up cancelling her flight and staying nearly 6 months and counting…..good on her I told her! After cruise wandered around the old town perimeter grabbing a bite or a drink at will then returned about 5:30pm. Headed out about 6pm to “The Happy Hippie bar for a beer and then strolled to “The Moat House” as it had very good reviews. Spotted a Port Vale sign on the wall bizarrely and found out from staff that the owner was a Vale fan! Met Rob whose family are born and bred in Burslem and who moved over to Thailand about 18 years ago and through various situations ended up buying a house and a bar with a business partner whilst teaching at the local school. Great guy! Spent the night getting merry with Rob and an Irish guy named Robbie who had some crazy stories. Also a guy from Cannock who retired here many moons ago. Cracking day and night all round!
